Eco hand-made Christmas tree

Hello everyone!

Though extremely late, I will show you Christmas tree we had this year. Usually in Ostroh we had a small artificial tree and decorated it with straw ornaments. In Rivne we also had an artificial tree, but bigger and decorated it with old (or I can say vintage) glass ornaments which we have from my childhood! I really like those, despite the modern tendencies in Christmas tree decoration!

But this New Year was special because we were neither in Ostroh, nor in Rivne! This year we spent our New Year and Christmas holidays in Warsaw! Vitalina and I came to Warsaw on the 20th of December! While we were unpacking our staff the Polish Christmas Eve has come! I really wanted to buy a Christmas tree at first, because we still had New Year and our Christmas ahead, but we didn't manage to buy one till the 25th, and after it appeared to be so, that they sell Christmas trees only till their Christmas! :) At first I was a little disappointed, but we found a way out very quickly!

We lived in the outskirts of Warsaw in a house, and not far from us there was a forest with pines growing in it! We liked going for a walk to the forest, and once when we were walking in the forest we thought of picking some pine brunches for our "Christmas tree"! We did so and return home!

The next dilemma for us was what to use to put those brunches in! As we rented the house, we didn't have much things there, and of course we didn't have an appropriate vase for it as well. But this dilemma was also easily solved, when we went to a closest little shop with different staff for home. We bought a plastic vase, which fitted greatly for our purpose.

Also we have set the aim for us to decorate our tree or let call it "Christmas composition" in such a way, so that we wouldn't buy any decorations (because it was extra to take back home)! This aim was also easily achieved with the help of salt dough and two oranges (and we didn't spend a lot for our supplies) :)

I will return to our pine brunches before i will start telling about the decorations! At first we created our composition: we put the brunches into the vase! In order the vase not to fall because of the brunches' weight we put rocks into the vase! Also we made a Christmas wreath using the pine brunches. As for the wreath, I just used the decorative ribbon to tie brunches together. Easy-peasy :)When both our compositions were ready, Vitalina and I started making the ornaments!!!

This year we had three kinds of ornaments: salt dough circles of different colours, salt dough aromatic figures and orange medallions.

Для створення таких прикрас потрібно / to create such ornaments you will need:

- мука / flour
- сіль / salt
- вода / water
- мелена кориця / ground cinnamon
1-2 oranges
paint (it is best to use acrylic paint, but I use water-colour paint)

As for the salt dough recipe I used the following:
- 1 cup salt + 2 cups flour, mix together with a spoon then add 130-150 ml of cold water. Mix well and then knead the dough as usual.

Be careful, from this ratio you will get a lot of dough! That's why I made 2 batches of dough from this amount of ingredients, because we will make two variants ornaments! One batch will be plain and another batch with the cinnamon (just add ground cinnamon before you mix all ingredients and then knead the dough).

The dough is ready! It's time to make ornaments!

First I made ornaments from the plain salt dough. Once I found this idea on Pinterest, using arbor vitae for the design (you can use any greenery you'd like)! Using the rolling pin (a glass in my case :) ) I rolled the greenery into the dough, then using the same glass (instead of a cookie cutter) cut the circles from the dough! using a toothpick I made holes for the ribbon or string! One kind of ornaments is ready!

From another part of dough, with cinnamon I made different Christmas figures! Such ornaments are easy to make using cookie cutters, but if you don't have any, it is also easy to cope without them. Look up for different pictures in the Internet, print them or transfer them from screen to the paper and then cut out the picture - here we have a pattern! Then put the pattern on the rolled out dough and using a knife cut out the figure! Don't forget about the holes for ribbon or string!

I also used this method, as I didn't have cookie cutters! I made figures of angel, 2 kinds of deer, stars, Christmas trees and one heart! Christmas trees, stars and heart I cut out without any pattern, but deer and angel I found in Internet. Here you can find pictures I used:

And, finally, the third kind of ornaments - orange medallions! you just need to slice an orange!!!! Done!

This was the first stage of making ornaments! After this we take a baking pan and put it into the oven. Turn the oven low (50 degrees - maximum 100)! And be patient, because it will take you minimum 3 hours for the ornaments to dry out! It took me much longer - around seven hours in the oven and then overnight on the  radiator!

If you haven't made anything with salt dough, here's the answer to your logical question: why put the oven on low and why it takes so long? The answer is: because if you turn the oven on high, it will, of course, be quicker for the dough to dry, but the ornaments may change their form and not be even! I have tried out this method already! It doesn't look very nice!

Ok! It is time for photos, at last!!!! Here are my ornaments ready to go to the oven!

When the ornaments are dry, we can move on to the next stage! If to take the figures with cinnamon, everything is easy, I just added a decorative ribbon! Here are nice brown Christmas ornaments with a pleasant scent of cinnamon!

А це на ялинці / and on the tree :

As for the the circles, I painted them with a watercolor paints! You can also use acrylic or gouache paint for deeper colour! You can also sprinkle them with glitter!

And here are the orange medallions, for some reason very popular in Poland (at least this year).

Interesting that from one orange turned out different medallions, and every one is interesting! Here, take a look:

Now it is time to decorate our Christmas tree and wreath with our ornaments!

Here you can see our Christmas composition from pine tree brunches, salt dough and oranges!

And here is a wreath, to which I added a 3D star!!!!

Our Christmas tree and a wreath gave joy to us during all Christmas and New Year Holidays! We were also happy that we made them ourselves, that it didn't hurt our environment, that we, having alive pine tree, didn't hurt or cut any tree, and also that it is extremely money-saving! Minimum expenses, your creativity and some effort will reward you with a Christmas beauty!

I think, that such Christmas tree will add to our family traditions of Christmas tree decorating! Maybe to your too...!

Thanks for stopping by!

See you soon!
